Former Governor Carey (D) Goes Under Knife

ALBANY -- Former Gov. Hugh L. Carey was flown from his Florida residence to New York City
for cardiac bypass surgery, his daughter Nancy Carey Cassidy said Thursday.

Carey, a Democrat, served two terms as governor, from 1975 to 1983. He served 14 years in Congress earlier.
The 90-year-old political veteran was rushed to New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center after taking a Med-Jet to New York, his daughter said. Carey is "doing well and we expect a full recovery," said Carey Cassidy, one of his 14 children.

She said he had been having difficulty breathing during his exercise routines recently, and a shortness of breath Wednesday was a cause for concern. He did not have a heart attack, his daughter said.

Dr. G. David Onstad of Ft. Lauderdale and a team of physicians at Holy Cross Hospital discovered a coronary blockage and recommended the governor return to New York for surgery.

Under the care of Dr. Wayne Isom at Cornell, Carey was reported to be alert at all times and serenaded the medical flight crew with "New York, New York" during the flight, according to his family. Before surgery on Thursday, he quipped that his World War II experience, his experience in Congress and in Albany, and years of parenthood conditioned him for a heart operation, his family said.
