Volunteers to Celebration of Service Luncheon Feb. 16
Jefferson Community College (JCC) and the Greater Watertown North Country (GWNC) Chamber of Commerce will co-host “A Celebration of Service” luncheon on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at 12:15 p.m. in the Walker Instructional Dining Room, McVean Building, at JCC. Volunteerism and civic responsibility is integral to the quality of life and sustainability of any community, including the North Country. If you volunteer in our community, please join JCC and the GWNC Chamber of Commerce for a luncheon to celebrate the vital connection between a community and those dedicated to serving it.
The Celebration of Service luncheon will feature a keynote address by Mark Walter, executive director of the New York State Commission on National and Community Service, Office of Governor David A. Paterson. The Commission aims to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering in New York State. In 2008, the Commission launched the New Yorkers Volunteer website (www.newyorkersvolunter.org) as a statewide initiative to engage more New Yorkers in volunteering and community service. The website connects volunteers with organizations, provides information and training opportunities for local volunteer organizations and educates New Yorkers about state and federal funding opportunities for national service and volunteer programs.
Prior to joining the Commission as Executive Director in February 2008, Mr. Walter served as the State Business Development Director of the New York American Red Cross, where he was instrumental in bridging public and private entities to build local capacity and fundraising efforts for 36 Red Cross chapters. While with the Red Cross, he has managed AmeriCorps*, AmeriCorps*VISTA, and Homeland Security programming as well as chaired the review board for Citizen Corps Program grants. In 2003, Mr. Walter became Director of New York State Learn & Serve America, managing the startup and implementation of the program which partners public and private sector agencies to engage youth in curriculum-based community service, more commonly referred to as service learning.
The luncheon buffet of soup, grilled chicken Caesar salad and dessert, costs $14 per person. Reservations and payment are required by February 10, 2010. Please make checks payable to Jefferson Community College and mail to the Office of College Outreach, Jefferson Community College, 1220 Coffeen Street, Watertown, NY, 13601-1897. For additional information, please call Gail Miller, Office of College Outreach, 315-786-2257.
